Straighten Teeth Without Metal Brackets and Wires!
For years, those with even mild or moderate levels of misaligned teeth were forced to choose traditional braces to fix them. These metal brackets and wires were effective at shifting teeth, but carried with them a substantial number of drawbacks as well. One of the most notable downsides of traditional braces was the way they transformed your appearance for many years at a time.
For those who want to shift teeth more discretely, Invisalign is considered the leader in realignment via clear aligner technology. If you aren’t sure if Invisalign is right for your case, give our office a call and schedule an appointment with Dr. Merriman!
How Does Invisalign Work?
Invisalign treatment uses a series of clear, FDA-approved, medical-grade plastic aligners to gently shift teeth into a straighter and more even position. Every individual’s series is unique and each pair of aligners is designed to represent a different stage of your treatment. During your Invisalign consultation, Dr. Merriman will examine your smile and work with an Invisalign lab to create your series. The entire treatment is mapped from start to finish using Invisalign’s proprietary software, so the dentist will be able to make adjustments as necessary to better accommodate your treatment.
Each pair is worn for about two weeks at a time between 20 and 22 hours per day. It is crucial that you wear the aligners enough as it directly influences the length and results of your treatment. If you aren’t wearing your aligners for long enough, Dr. Merriman will make that clear to you during your routine checkups.
What are the Benefits of Invisalign?
There are many benefits to consider when you choose Invisalign treatment to correct crooked teeth. If you have questions about them, feel free to mention it to the dentist during your consultation. Common benefits include:
- Faster treatment time overall (typically between 8 and 18 months)
- A truly discrete method for shifting teeth
- Easier oral care (compared to traditional braces)
- The freedom to eat the foods you want (clear aligners are fully removable)
- Lower risk of dental emergencies
- Fewer dental visits
Am I a Candidate for Invisalign?
If you have mild to moderate levels of misalignment or malocclusions (underbite, overbite, etc.) and are committed to wearing the aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day, chances are you’re eligible for treatment. Keep in mind that while teenagers and adults are ideal candidates, those whose teeth are still developing should wait until their teeth have finished doing so before starting treatment. Furthermore, those with tooth decay or gum disease will need to have it treated prior to any cosmetic treatment. While maintenance for clear aligners is minimal, you will still need to make sure to clean your aligners on a daily basis. This will prevent staining and reduce the risk of you developing tooth decay or gum disease during treatment.
Those with more complex cases of misalignment may want to reconsider traditional braces, but Dr. Merriman will make sure to inform you of this during your consultation.
